Matthew Cristello Fallen Process Redux

Fallen Process Redux
2015
Microcrystalline Wax
9" x 4" x 3"

The initial wax sculpture was not invested in plaster correctly, destroying various sprues as well as exposing major parts of the wax to the open air that would have otherwise been protected behind plaster. The piece depicted above is a totally new wax sculpture, with the head and wings removed, and sprues not added for documentation purposes. The sculpture is entirely made of wax to be melted out of the plaster casted mold. On this version the sprue architecture was created upside-down, with the mouth of the pour spout being drilled into a piece of plywood for stability, and the figure itself being suspended in the air from the pour spout hooking into it's back in the orientation seen on the top image. This process created a much more stable and less fussy grounding for the plaster, which could be poured without a loss of access to the wax sculpture and without a risk of the piece moving or worrying about suspending the figure in the plaster by hand while waiting for it to cure. After the plaster cured, the investment was easily ripped off the plywood and dried out for a week in preparation for the wax cook out.
