Matt Cristello A Void Between Spaces

A Void Between Spaces
2015
Aluminum, Plaster
9" x 4" x 3"

After the casting reached about 1300 degrees in the burn out kiln after 4 hours, the gas was shut off and the piece was allowed to cool just before the aluminum pouring, at which point it was heated up to 600 degrees in preparation for the actual pouring. Unfortunately the pour spout had black soot on the rim of the cast, an apparent indicator that it still needs to be cooked out. When the aluminum was being poured, it sputtered out and on top of the mold and onto the bricks beneath. This resulted in several sprue outlets being covered by aluminum and trapping the air within, causing the legs and right arm to not be filled with aluminum. Through this process the artwork took a new unprecedented form and language, and began to create a new dialogue. This piece talks about relics of the past, trying to create substance where there is none, and futility.
