Ballerina Dryad
Courtney Connell
Metal, Ribbon and Tulle

Ballerina Dryad is my response to the appealing qualities of nature and it's unending ability to attract our attention. By using a pinkish color to accent different areas of the piece, I hope to bring to life the very cold silver look of the metal to create a clear contrast of organic versus industrial. The ballerina form was chosen for the graceful moves and organic flows, which are translated from nature. Growing from her waist are branches and leaves. This creates a piece that is both nature and human; noting the fact that we are one with nature, we come from the earth and after death we will become part of the earth again. The title came from playing off what the sculpture was suppose to be and adding the Greek term dryad, meaning tree nymph, to play with the idea of fantasy.
