Adorned

2019

Mosaic tile, preserved moss, found/discarded objects, stone, grout, glue

Multiple Dimensions

Broken, discarded, and empty, a series of objects are collected and reformed. Inspired by all the trash that sits in our landscape and surrounding environment today, I transform these objects into something other than trash that will ultimately blend in with the environment while also putting these objects to a decorative use.

Self Embodiment

Size Variable

Through the creation of these hands I’ve learned a great deal about myself and the standards I live by. By doing so I’ve gone back to my roots, working on the core ideals to better myself as a human being. Self Embodiment is my attempt to convey this with the objects I’ve gathered and altered through the unassumingly simple process of carving. Through this process each objects own unique character is developed and set on their own journey.

Self Reflection

February, 2019

Wood

4'6" x 1' x 5'

When making this piece I was mainly focused on what my hand carvings meant to me. After many thoughts and pointless idea’s, I decided id go with a very narrative approach. The Inspiration came from objects with personal significance to my father and I, Dealing with our relationship and how we are as people. Through the process I realized it was less about the objects and more about the way I had the hands interact with each other. The piece has evolved drastically since the first critique. At first what seemed as a fail, led to a greater understanding of the relationship between the hands and I. Its not about the narrative, but each individual hand themselves. They all are a part of me, an extension of myself and a creation of a language for me to express myself. The evolution continues…

"YOU KNOW WHERE I'LL BE FOUND"
2019
6.5' x 6 ' x 5'
steel, foam, cement

so go do what you like
make sure you do it wise
you may find out that your self doubt
means nothing, ruins everything
you can't go forcing something
if it's just not right.

Simply motivated by one of my earliest musical influences, Green Day, this lyric perfectly summarizes how I often feel about the direction of my personal life versus the direction of my desired career. So when the opportunity to create a kinetic outdoor installation presented itself, it was only fitting to implement this quote and quite literally allow it to lead my piece around and around.

Cocoon

2019

Chicken wire, plaster, cloth

5' x 15' x 12'

Cocoon explores the repression and avoidance of memory. Hanging from a tree of life and memory, each memory hangs like a fruit, but has been turned from organic into unyielding and dead looking "stone". Plaster acts as a petrifying agent, obscuring memories in a rigid cocoon while simultaneously preserving them and suspending them in a fixed state, mimicking the inability to confront and move forward from avoided memories.  As the memories remain petrified they infect even the pathway to them, freezing and obscuring the way to reach them, and implies that eventually the petrification may reach the tree itself if not addressed.

How often do we carefully explore our surroundings? To be able to find something that's in front, to the side, or behind. To completely be in the moment and know what's going on. Can you find a friend, a new face, a peculiar sign, a funny moment? What can we find by catching a glimpse of a moment?
