The human skull has been a large part of my work for the past few years. I have been exploring the skull in a number of mediums, techniques and sizes for a while and this is the culmination of those efforts. The skull floats ominously just two feet off of the wall and about 5 feet off the floor.

They are so important to us because they sustain us in so many ways, yet are becoming harder and harder for us to touch and get a hold of as we continue to destroy them.

This is and interactive mechanical hand attached to an arm and supported by bungee cords. As the viewer moves the hand up or down, the fingers will open and close.

The fingers function with the combination of steel springs and carbon fiber strips which allow the fingers to return to their original position. The had itself is constructed from conduit steel piping, copper piping, and aluminum.

As for the image of a very large metal hand and the banana over its shadow, its really up to the viewer what the story is.

This piece is about the disjointed relationship between Man and Nature. We go to the lumber yard, pick up our pre-cut wood and go to town. Do we ever think much about the tree or bush the lumber was cut from?

Using a piece of quarter sawn lumber suspended on a wall, I wanted to cast a shadow of where the piece of lumber came from, and show its previous life as a once living object. The shadow form was constructed using brown and black dyed mulch.

Two masks are juxtaposed and conjoined into a form of a helmet: one face that has absolutely no expression (a blank face) with another that illustrates a quizzical and absurd face.

What expressions will people make when they see one mask versus the other? The idea of this piece is to make a limitation on how much the user can see in comparison to how much the viewer is able to see. The blank face is in the front and the other in the back. The user is only able to see the faces of the viewer from the front, but has no knowledge of what their expressions are when they are looking from the back.

In this work I used as a cross cut of a tree. I expanded upon the idea of the rings of the tree that represent the trees History. I brought the History of the tree into space by cutting out the tree rings and restacking them to create a solide volume. I used fiberglass mat and resin to reinforce the inner walls of the tree. The glass fibers took on the feel of wood fibers. The fibers locked the rings in place as well as expands upon the concept as the rings being stretched and pulled apart in space. The resin created a sap color that contrasts the outside. The outside also contrasted the interior with the saw marks and glue left from my process off cutting and rejoining the wood. The Exterior that can be read from the small ring to the large is a look into my process of creating this work. In reverse looking at the sculpture from the interior(above image) reflects my carving of the HIstory of the tree going from large to small to get to the oringial ring of the tree.

The glass, filled with fresh water, is just out of arms reach and creates a sense of longing for a cool, refreshing drink. Without water we would not survive and this piece represents our limited supply of fresh water. By placing the glass high above the viewer they immediately assume a pose which suggests reverence for what is upon the pedestal. Seeing the un-reachable glass of water gives the viewer a sense of wanting what they can not have (or reach).

Spīthra was inspired by the idea of nests and eggs; specifically the eggs of spiders. The yarn is used as an allusion to the spider’s webbing, while the partially exposed plastic wrap and newspaper bases give mention to an embryo like substance that could be found inside these eggs. There is also an underlying theme dealing with the housewife and the stereotypical activities she may partake in in her free time.

Unrest is a jumbled stage of fears. It forms a distorted shape to the viewer and a disorienting environment for the performer. Each element represents a component of various fears. Some regard dangers of sex, drugs, rock & roll, natural disasters, foreign affairs, war, isolation, confinement, loss, rebellion and an overall misunderstanding of surroundings.

The performer is told to dance, carefully so as not to break the thin container. I set something into action and let it go without me, like a computer without virus protection. I find humor in how beautiful this piece is in action. Because everything about Unrest is based on fear, and the people inside are just dancng. When a person moves inside they are diffused but on display. They cannot see the reactions by people outside. To me, watchingt them feels like managing to grow a willow tree in the salt flats. And It is too beautiful to last.

I explore issues of personal identity. While treating each layer of Plexiglass as trapped in history, I create a self-portrait using high dynamic range photography. Considering each layer a unique component of my personal history, I use various opacities, throughout thirteen layers, to create a subtle but yet distorted journey though space. The layers beneath the surface trap dust, scratches and become ambiguous; however, each layer plays and important role in creating the final image.

Mustaches are often so much a part of a face that they often go unnoticed. It seems that when removed from the face and juxtaposed to a blank wall the mustache becomes an unusual decoration or odd point of interest. Taken out of it's nature habitat the mustache can now be revered for it's major role in historical and contemporary styles, adorning the faces of many distinguished and or unruly characters, a mark of identity.

Modeling Clay and Artificial Hair

For this assignment, I was very interested in how the body endures change at different moments in life, especially death. I wanted to represent this human face at the dividing moment between existence and non-existence. I researched different acts that the body does when dying. For example, a slumped head, the jaw completely dropped, and the blood drained from the surface of the face. I made the head smaller than usual and the hair more abundant than usual to make the viewer wonder whether this sculpture is actually human or not. It has the physiognomy of a human face, but lacks the correct anatomical structure of a human head. The moment someone takes the last breath an ceases to be was what I was trying to convey in this piece.

Manger

Artificial Hair on Wooden Frame

I based this project off of one I had previously did this semester. I explored a lot with hair this semester and discovered different techniques and observed closely how people treat their hair. The manger is very symbolic and important in Christianity. This piece isn't meant to be viewed as religious, but the idea of the manger really intrigued me. A manger is meant to hold or cradle something or someone. The manger I created is on the wall, above the ground and is triangular in shape. There is also no body occupying the interior space. It is up to the viewer to decide who resides in this manger. I thought using hair for this nest would be interesting because mangers are usually made out of hay and straw, which is a typical resting place for animals. Making a bed out of hair gives it an eerie quality. Making a bed of human hair, skin, nails, and blood would be pretty cool now that I think of it.

The inspiration behind this project was a pattern that I have had stuck in my head for some time. The pattern is a combination of a spiraling wave, common in Greek art, and a fractal pattern. I wanted to create a structure that showcases this pattern in a three dimensional form. The UD botanic gardens is the perfect place to display this work because it mimics the natural elements of the garden such as branches of a tree, bush, or vine. The two most important elements for me are the contrast between the unnatural and natural and the interior void created by a form that no longer exist. Envision a vine has grown up around a cube and the cube has disappeared, much like the vines that grow up around trees in the rainforest, killing the tree inside leaving an empty space between a network of vines.

The Veneration Portraits investigates identity that is described through deeply rooted interactions with nature. The University of Delaware grounds keeping members interested in the devoted physical labor required to maintain forces of nature, sustain this campus and are the subjects of my piece. I consider grounds keeping’s collaborative efforts a powerful part of an unseen history that is often overlooked. Their poses reference presidential portraiture where one single figure represents a larger group and assumes power. My goal is to create visual landmarks to represent the permanent integrity of their work while commemorating their labor-intensive and dignified involvement with nature.

The inspiration for this piece came from the ceiling, and coulombs of Gaudi’s cathedral in Barcelona, the Sagrada Familia. The way the coulombs branched out like tree branches was interesting to me. When looking up at the ceiling in the cathedral you are overwhelmed by light pouring in from the stain glass windows, lighting up all of coulombs. I wanted to recreate the structure of the coulombs, while at the same time give the feeling that they are glowing. As I built each coulomb out of wire and then stretched fabric over them the project began to change. I put so much effort into creating each frame that they began to take on personalities. I wanted to put the coulombs together in a group while still allowing each one to be different like individual creatures. Light from the ceiling is directed through blue plastic discs causing each structure to glow.

This piece is about a personal safety connection to hair. Since the beginning of human life, early people's sole need for hair was to keep them warm and protect their skull. Today hair still keeps us warm, but it has become more of an accessory rather than a part of our bodies. For many people, hair is a comfort blanket to make them feel less exposed. This feeling of fear of losing hair is a very primitive and subconscious thought. To lose hair makes most people feel self-conscious. Therefore, wigs and hair growth formulas are made to give the illusion of hair growth. I used long hair, because with age people experience hair thinning and hair loss.

Motivated to explore issues of personal identity, I consider human skin a unique specimen that has the ability to both conceal and reveal. Ambitious to hide objects, actions and interactions, the process in creating this piece becomes a precious history. The hidden history beneath the surface skin can only be revealed if the entire piece is destroyed. As reflections and surface patterns distort the inner layer, one can only speculate the interactions and history beneath the surface. Furthermore, a history of touch also plays an important factor in the work. The skin print sample (seen on the right) represents the artists signature and is the only object to come directly from my physical skin. I began by using oil paint to cover my hand until I matched my skin tone and ultimately created a small mono print from the paint on my skin. These mono prints became the reference imagery for my sculptural painting.

This sculpture is dedicated to the English Language Institute. It represents international community and growth through its relationship to a coral reef. Coral reefs are structures made from colonies of tiny living animals living together that create the most diverse ecosystem on earth. The sculptures foundation is a mineral or Gemstone from which coral is built upon, grows and thrives. The sculpture tapers to a point to symbolize the continual intellectual growth achieved at the ELI, through the persistent commitment of teaching linguistics and professional skills to international students. This sculpture represents a diverse international community through the varying shapes, sizes, and perspectives that shift when someone views the coral like forms from the different angles. The coral like forms all come together to make one sculpture representing a partnership and active international network. Its red color similar to that of blood symbolizes the one color all coral reefs have in common.

The sculpture will be placed at the entrance to the newly constructed ELI building. The sculpture will be visible as you walk in the entrance and from every area inside the two-story space and stair well. It will be installed on the first floor and rise all the way to the second floor. Visitors, students, and faculty can view the different intricate paths of the structure as they walk up the steps. It will have an equally dynamic and different view as they view it from the second floor balcony.

The sculpture will be 2 ‘ long by 2’ wide by 16’ height. It will be painted red with a semi-gloss finish. This sculpture will be built as one solid structure and will be strong and lightweight. The sculpture will be free standing and held in place by two pins which will secure it to the cement foundation. The material used to form this sculpture will be foam. I will reinforce this lightweight material with a layer of fiberglass resin and mat to give it rigid strength and support. I will finish it with a epoxy gel coat which is a high strength and durable fiberglass coating. Its base will be 2.5’ long by 2.5’ wide by 2.5’ height. It will be composed in a semi-transparent teal resin to compliment the sculpture.

My intention for this piece was originally to be an exact structure of a tiger paw - inside and out. The steel structure is a replica of the bones of a tiger. During the process of creating the paw, the form began to look less "real" and more "surreal." From then on, I decided for this sculpture to be an experimental project by combining many different materials. Placing the bird at the top of the paw inspired me to attach a short but bizarre story to it: The blind bird devoured the beast and now resting atop its remaining limb.

Fabric, Thread, and Found objects
This piece started as a reflection into my past. The combination of childhood toys and soft colors with the scientific subject of anatomy are meant to show growing up too fast. I believe it shows growing up too fast because a child would not know what anatomy was unless they had to learn adult material at a young age. The fabrics that I chose were all used and worn down which I think furthers the meaning of this piece.

These images were taken of the model I made for my proposal for the sculpture in the entryway to the ELI office building on Main street. The actual piece will be made of colored vinyl sewn onto steel frames that hang from the ceiling by fishing line. The vinyl will have tracings of ELI students and general university students made as a collaborative effort by one another. The light through the windows and from the ceiling will cast nice reflections of colors and shapes around the room. This will form a gentle ambiance. The drawings and shifting light will change the piece with each viewing. It can be visually explored as people walk up and around the stairs revealing new things each time.

- My inspiration for this piece came from my trip to Tanzania and the Flat Top Acacia trees that are native to the country. I was inspired by the way that the branches twist and turn and look like they are going to grow out and take over whatever is surrounding them. I wanted to mimic the movement of the Acacia branches in a material that contrasted nature but could still maintain a fluid motion. I cut down sheets of plexi glass into various sized strips. Using a heat gun, I molded each strip by hand to mimic the organic lines and motion of the trees. Each strip was held to the next by wrapping aluminum wire around the two ends and eventually creating a small cluster. The aluminum clusters add another element to the piece and mimic the knots of the branches and splits in how they grow. The piece can be displayed various ways, however, draping it over a pedestal allows it to move into the viewers space. The plastic "branches"are placed to look as if they are growing and taking over the pedestal.

My intentions in this work was to create a continuous rolling code created by cutting strips of plywood that are then chisels in half. I composed three convex panels together to make a series of freeze frames of this code. This Binary Code or true and false code splits the panels in half horizontally. As I chiseled the wood in half the darker wood be placed in the mirrored spot of the lighter color related to the center the panel. I see this work as not a separation and splitting or even crossing of this code of true or false or light and dark ,rather as them existing side by side rolling together as to be resolved, both informing the other. I choose wood for this work because I came about an interesting texture with plywood through previous work. This texture was invocative of exotic woods, native American patterns, and perhaps even African like print. In this work, however, instead of using only half the wood I cut on the table saw I salvaged both sides as I split them to save on material consumption, adding a different constrasting dynamic to my piece.

Earlier, I traced people on sheets of vinyl. I may have been trying to preserve something. That is a common use of plastic today. It protects food from air, furniture from humans and humans from humans.
The transparency is what attracts me to the material. The ability to see through it and record what is visible. The Catbox was the first time I constructed something specifically for a tracing and in the future I would like to custom build shapes specifically for the subject to be traced. With the cats I tried to figure out what it is about this process that I am so drawn to. I traced the cats multiple times over the course of a couple weeks and I think it lost something in that. It wasn't a rush to save something that was going somewhere else. With people you cannot keep them under plastic for long. It was a rush to compromise how much they are willing to stand being traced. The cats liked it though, they had plenty of air and they liked the attention. The cats movement made for a nice element. In my next vinyl piece I will use a specific human subject in motion.

Marcel Proust wrote, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes." I seek those eyes as well as new landscapes and this piece was just another failed attempt to find them. I see it as hopefully subtle and beautiful if it is given the chance. My reasons for using the plastic are the same. The transparency and, to some degree, the cheapening of a first-hand experience. I melted and carved images from my sketchbook of people on trains, a black dog's leg, a cat's face, a horizon line, measurements and symbols from maps and navigational instruments. I may revisit this sometime elsewhere.

This work started originally on the vertical steel saw cutting a piece of light rail into thin strips on a whim. Intrigued by the process and the end result of thin slices, I began to investigate things that were also attributed to slicing and cutting.

These works seem to make suggestions regarding their subjects. The transparency of the plastic is the most important aspect of these works. The drawings on the vinyl were traced directly off of living people. Part A revolves around the dress, my Grandma's discarded wedding dress from 1963 and suggestions of someone being trapped inside it.
Part B is a colorful plastic depiction of a friend of mine. A 22-year old girl, the same age my Grandma was when she was married in that dress.

This piece came together by combining two projects. The intaglio prints of a female figure which represents an allegory of indigenous young girls & an amorphous shape that came from a dream. This piece was inspired after I came across an article about how now in 2010 there are still several towns around the world where females' rights are not respected. Once a girl reaches the age of 12 or reaches puberty her family will exchange her for an animal or money.

Scroll was inspired by these card ribbons. The process of collecting the material has been slow going for a few years now. The manner in which I installed the piece emphasizes the visual and tactile characteristics of the ribbon material. The ribbons change the light and the light changes the space. They weave to show different colors of the spectrum in different layers. The systematic ink drops on the newsprint scroll are the result of an experiment. I used cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink to dripped row after row from each step of a twelve foot ladder five times.

This piece is the result of using two forms of the same material to show the movement of time by making use of it's natural properties. The firmness and solidity of glass can be manipulated to have a wax-like liquidity, while the ever-changing motion that sand has can be frozen in time to almost imitate a solid.

In a world of practicality and "end-justifed-by-means" thinking, is art enough of a "means" to create pollution?
